Lake Wilkie is a small special moor lake on the southeast coast of the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The lake is located around 45 km southwest of Balclutha in the Catlins and is only around 300 m from the beach at Tautuku Bay . The coastal road New Zealand State Highway 92 , which runs through the Catlins to the northeast and is part of the Southern Scenic Route , passes the small lake on its northern side about 60 m away. The lake is approximately 2.1  hectares in size, only 1.5 m deep and surrounded by forest on all sides.

Special features of the lake

The lake was formed between the sand dunes and the rock formations during the last ice age and was originally larger than it is today. Due to siltation , the lake has shrunk and has become considerably shallower. This typical moor lake, which is called Bog Lake in New Zealand and is very rare in New Zealand , was created through the progressive process of loading .

Flora and fauna

There are no fish in the lake, but there are small frogs that feed on mites, small mollusks, worms and the common back swimmers that occur in the lake. Various species of birds and ducks also live on the lake. The vegetation around the lake has been changing for many years. Especially between the beach and the lake, the forest typical of New Zealand is increasingly being displaced by plants that live near the water, such as marsh plants or flax. The transition from Sphagnum moss to the mature forest takes place here within just 65 meters.
