Shrine to Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan Sharif

Uthman Marwandi (* 1177 ; † 1274 ), known as Lal Schahbaz Qalandar , was a Sufi master from the 13th century. He was originally from Marwand in what is now Afghanistan and later headed east to Sehwan Sharif in what is now Pakistan's Sindh province . There he worked on the lower Indus at the site of an old Shiva shrine. He is said to have lived there initially in a hollow tree trunk outside the village and later also in the prostitute district.

Mainly to see Qalandar - dervishes in its tradition and thus regard him as their spiritual master. He has the honorary name Lal Schahbaz , which means "red king falcon". His shrine in Sehwan Sharif is an important place of pilgrimage, and the song dedicated to him, Mast Qalandar , is sung by qawwali singers across the country . On the day of the death of the saint ( ʿurs , roughly "holy wedding") and on general Islamic holidays, large crowds of pilgrims gather at the shrine. Music and dance are essential. The ritual, ecstatic dance is accompanied by drumming ( dhamal , the dance as a whole is also called colloquially). The kettle drums naqqara and the double-skinned barrel drums dhol are struck .

ISIS attack

On February 16, 2017, a suicide bomber detonated a bomb during the drum dance ceremony in the sanctuary, killing a total of 88 people and injuring over 340 people, some seriously. At least 20 children and nine women were among those killed. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISLS) claimed responsibility for the attack .
