Shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan Sharif

Sehwan Sharif , also Sehwan ( Urdu سیہون, Sindhi سيهوڻ) is a city in the Jamshoro district of the Sindh province of Pakistan . The city is located on the west bank of the Indus River , 130 km northwest of Hyderabad , which lies on the east bank of the Indus. The name Sehwan could come from "Siwistan" or "Sevistan". Sevistan was the kingdom of Raja Dahir , which reached as far as the Punjab under the name "Shivi". In 711 it was conquered by Muhammad bin Qasim and two centuries later by Mahmud of Ghazni . Even the Mughal Empire Emperor Humayun tried in vain to conquer it. However, this only succeeded his son Akbar I. Under June Bek it became the capital of the Kingdom of Thatta .

The city has a patron saint, the Sufi Lal Shahbaz Qalandar , who lived here in the 13th century. His shrine is the destination of over a hundred thousand pilgrims every year. The nearby Manchar Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Pakistan.

On February 16, 2017, at least 90 people were killed and more than 350 injured in a devastating suicide bombing at the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. The IS confessed to the deed.
