Lama or LAMA , original spelling LAMA with the subtitle “… take it easy!”, Is a simple card game by the German game designer Reiner Knizia , which was published in 2018 by Amigo . In May 2019 Lama was nominated for Game of the Year together with the games Just One and Werworths .

Theme and equipment

When Lama is a card-laying game similar to the classic Mau Mau and other games in which the players try to play off as possible all the cards of their hand of cards to a central pile. In this game, unlike Mau-Mau or Uno, there are no special cards, but a player has the option of passing and thus getting out of the current "round". Matching players and losers in a round receive minus points in the form of chips, and round winners can hand in chips. The game ends if a player has accumulated more than 40 minus points after a round and thus loses the game.

In addition to instructions, the game material consists of 56 cards, 8 number cards each with the values 1 to 6 and 8 lama cards, as well as 70 scoring chips, 50 of which are worth one and 20 are worth 10 minus points.

Style of play

Before the game, the cards are shuffled and each player is dealt six cards in hand. The remaining cards form a central draw pile, from which the top card is revealed. The scoring chips are laid out ready.

All players pick up their hand cards and now in turn try to place a suitable card on the card on display. You can place either the same card or the next card on each card (1 to 6 and Lama), with the Lama following the 6 and the 1 following. If a player cannot discard any of his hand cards, he must draw a card and it is the next player's turn. As a third option, a player has the opportunity to pass and thus get out of the current round. If the draw pile is empty, it is not shuffled and the player concerned has to fold if he cannot discard.

The round is over when a player has discarded all of his hand cards or when all players have dropped out. All players who dropped out and all players who were unable to discard their cards by the end of the game receive scoring chips or minus points. All number cards count their numerical value and the llama cards 10 minus points - however, each value is only settled once, regardless of the number of cards with the same value. If a player succeeds in ending the round by discarding the last card, he may surrender any chip, regardless of whether it is a white one-chip or a black ten-chip.

The game ends when a player has accumulated 40 or more minus points. The winner of the game is the player with the fewest negative points; if there is a tie, several players win.

Versions and reception

The game LAMA was developed by the German game designer Reiner Knizia and was published in 2019 by the German publisher Amigo .

The game received positive reviews on multiple platforms. The game critic Wieland Herold rates the game with its second-highest rating "Gladly again tomorrow" and Udo Bartsch describes the game in his blog "Reviews for Millions" as "extremely good". He sums it up

"Games like this are needed because they convey what gaming fun is in the simplest possible way."

In May 2019 Lama was nominated for Game of the Year together with the games Just One and Werworths . The jury justified the admission as follows:

“Author Reiner Knizia has ingeniously reduced the principle of placing cards. The task, which at first glance seems trivial, quickly develops a pull thanks to the minimal tactical note that hardly anyone can escape. The fast card game elicits emotions again and again from players of all target groups and it simply gives them a good time. With these characteristics, Lama has the potential to become a classic. "
