Lamachos
Lamachos ( Greek Λάμαχος Lámachos ; † 414 BC near Syracuse ) was an Athenian general.
Lamachos, son of Xenophanes, was distinguished by bravery and altruism. He came from a modest background and had to be economical with his money, which earned him the accusation of greed and pettiness from his opponents. Allegedly, he even had the expenses reimbursed for the soles of his shoes that were worn on duty. Because of his belligerent, martial nature, he was mocked by Aristophanes in the knights and in peace .
433 BC He freed Sinope from the tyrant Timesilaos on behalf of Pericles , commanded a fleet in the Black Sea in 424 and signed the peace of Nicias in 421 .
415 BC BC - already at an advanced age - he was chosen with Alcibiades and Nikias as general for the expedition to Sicily . He suffered greatly from his slow and hesitant general colleague Nikias, who was better able to assert himself in many ways because of his wealth, and, after his bold plan of attack had been rejected, fell in the summer of 414 before Syracuse in a duel against the Syracusan knight Kallikrates.
