The lambda point denotes a pressure-dependent temperature, below which a liquid becomes superfluid .

The lambda point takes its name from the graph that is created when the specific heat capacity is plotted as a function of temperature . The shape of the graph is similar to the Greek letter lambda "λ", whereby the specific heat capacity at the lambda point assumes the value infinite .

The most common helium - isotope , 4 He ( hereinafter referred to as superfluid state helium II ), is at a pressure of 5036 Pa at a temperature below 2.1768 K superfluid. In addition, superfluidity could only be observed with 3 He and 6 Li when the lambda point was not reached.
