Lambert Schmithausen

Lambert Schmithausen (born November 17, 1939 in Cologne ) is a German Indologist .

Life

From 1958 to 1963 he studied Indology, Arabic and philosophy at the Universities of Cologne, Bonn and Vienna . After receiving his doctorate in 1963 as Dr. phil. at the University of Vienna and his habilitation in 1966 for the subject of Indology at the University of Münster , he was an adjunct professor in Münster from 1970 to 1973 . In 1973 he took over the chair for Indology (Buddhology, Tibetology) at the University of Hamburg . Since 2005 he has been professor emeritus in Hamburg . He was visiting professor in Canberra (1989), Kyoto (1999 and 2005) and Tokyo (2006). Since 1977 he has been a member of the Joachim Jungius Society of Sciences . Since 1996 he has been a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

His research areas are early Buddhism, Buddhist philosophy (especially Yogacara) and Buddhist ethics (natural ethics, violence problems, value hierarchies and conflicts, vegetarianism).
