The old Romanesque church dates from the 13th century and was enlarged before the Thirty Years War . Around 1800 Ochtrup had 3,000 inhabitants and the old church was only enough for 1,000 parishioners.

So Pastor Joseph Goeking (1802–1813), successor to Pastor Philipp Wernekink (1758–1802), began preparations for the construction of a new church. In 1842 the collections began for a new building. In 1854, when the Laurenz brothers founded the weaving mill, there was a significant economic boom and pastor Ferdinand Tigges (1865–1892) was able to proceed with the implementation of the plans. In 1862 25,000 thalers had been collected for the new church building. The city of Ochtrup had meanwhile grown to 3,000 inhabitants. The Münster architect Hilger Hertel was commissioned to plan the new church . In 1866 the foundation stone for the new church building was laid. The neo-Gothic style was chosen because it was still very modern at the time.

The foundation stone for the new church building took place in 1866. In March 1869 the keystone for the vaulted ceiling was set. The painting work for the interior took more than four years. The solemn consecration of the church took place on August 27, 1873. There were four years and a month between the official laying of the foundation stone and completion. The tower is 225 feet (about 75 m) high. The construction costs for the church at that time amounted to more than 65,000 thalers. As early as 1895, the Sankt Lamberti church in the Münster diocese was equipped with electric light. Central heating followed in 1910. Over the decades, construction and changes continued.

In the course of the Second Vatican Council and its renewals in the liturgy, the choir room was adapted in 1975 by the council.

View through the main nave

In 1997, during the last major renovation of the church, the chancel was changed. The choir was pulled forward to the central nave. In 2000, the interior was given a new coat of paint, with the load-bearing elements painted in sandstone color.

Since November 27th, 2005 the Lambertikirche Ochtrup is also the parish church of the new parish Sankt Lambertus.

window

The windows were made by the stained glass workshop Derix from Goch in the style of the Nazarenes . The cycle in the nave represents the eight Beatitudes of the Sermon on the Mount according to Matthew : Blessed are the poor in spirit , Blessed are the meek, Blessed are the mourning , Blessed are the hungry and thirst for justice , Blessed are the merciful , Blessed are the peaceful and Blessed are those who suffer persecution .

Furnishing

  • The baptismal font , made of Bentheim sandstone from the 12th century , was installed in 1997 in the left aisle. It has the shape of a cylinder. Typical for this type of baptismal font are ornaments made of simple characters, such as beads in the shape of ropes. The baptismal font has recently been given a simple cap. The valuable neo-Gothic cap is exhibited on the side.
  • The square altar was joined together in 1997 from the former side altars and moved to the crossing.
  • There were two old bells from the 18th century that go back to Pastor Wernekink. Two of them fell victim to World War I (melted down in 1917) and were replaced by new ones in 1920.

organ

The organ of the Lambertikirche was built in 1891 by the organ building company Fleiter (Münster). The instrument has 54 stops on three manuals and a pedal . The action mechanism is mechanical, the register action of the slide chests is electrical.
