Life

She was born under the name Lana Hutton in Bradford, Yorkshire and attended school at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Filey, Yorkshire.

During the Second World War she worked in a bank and as a paralegal. She later used the experiences and information she gained there in her crime novels. On April 25, 1946, Lana Hutton married her fiancé Anthony George Bowen-Judd. Between 1948 and 1954 she ran a pig breeding farm with her husband. In 1957 she emigrated to Halifax (Canada) with her husband Anthony and worked there as an archivist at St. Mary's University until 1964 .

It was not until the age of 40 that she published her first detective novel Bloody Instructions (1962). This novel was the first of 48 novels in the "Antony Maitland series" that she wrote under the pseudonym Sara Woods. The English lawyer Anthony Maitland lives with his wife, his uncle Sir Nicholas Harding and his wife in an exclusive part of London. The defense of his clients is supported by his detective skills. The Maitland figure is partly laid out like a British Perry Mason .

Between 1962 and 1985 she wrote 55 crime novels which were published in Great Britain and the USA . Only Call Back Yesterday (1983) of the "Antony Maitland series" was released in Canada. She worked 6 hours a day as a writer, which explains her great productivity. In addition to the pseudonym Sara Woods, she wrote as Anne Burton the novels of the "Richard Trenton series" The Dear Departed (1980), Where There's a Will (1980) and Worse Than a Crime (1981). The novels of the "Jeremy Locke series" Burden of Proof (1980), Crimes Past (1980), The Ghost of an Idea (1981) and A Very Good Hater (1981) were published under the pseudonym Mary Challis . The novels of the "Anne Marryat series" The Healthy Grave (1980), We Must Have a Trial (1980) and Voice of the Past (1981) were published under the pseudonym Margaret Leek.

She was a member of numerous authors' associations, such as the "Society of Authors" (England), "Authors League of America", " Mystery Writers of America " and the "Crime Writers Association" (England). She served on the first executive committee for the "Crime Writers of Canada". From 1981–1985 she lived with her husband in Niagara-on-the-Lake , Ontario.

She died on November 5, 1985 in Toronto , Canada.
