music

Shalabi first made a name for himself in the Montreal music scene in the late 1990s , where he played with musicians from Alien8 Recordings and Constellation Records . In addition to his solo albums, he has released numerous other projects in changing and often large line-ups, the best known of which is his band Shalabi Effect . He also played as a guest musician with a few other artists, including A Silver Mt. Zion . Most of his music is instrumental; Singing voices usually only appear as part of a larger ensemble. While at the beginning of his career he mainly appeared as a guitarist, Shalabi increasingly occupied himself with the music of the Middle East and sometimes switched to the oud and other traditional instruments. Noises, electronic sounds and sampling also play a role in his music. Long pieces that develop slowly are typical. Shalabi's 2004 album Osama deals with Western and Arabic music in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 ; He recorded the 2008 oath with Arab musicians in Cairo . The album On Hashish is dedicated to Walter Benjamin . In 2008 Shalabi founded the Land of Kush orchestra in Montreal . The album Against the Day , published a year later, he named after Thomas Pynchon's novel Gegen den Tag ; the five pieces on the album are named after the five chapters of the novel.
