Exterior

The Landais pony has a small, dry, slightly concave head with a broad forehead, lively, large eyes and small pointed ears due to the influence of the Arab . The long neck is covered by a thick, luscious mane. The shoulders are sloping, the withers pronounced, the back straight and short, the croup slightly sloping. The high base of the tail has a bushy tail. The Landais pony is usually black, fox or bay, gray is rare. The height of the stallions is 120 to 135 cm, the height of the mares of section A is 118 to 135 cm, in section B it is 120 to 147 cm.

interior

The Landais pony is robust, undemanding, persistent and has a lively temperament. It is used in dressage, jumping and driving. It is a good trotter and is therefore also used for trotting races.

Breeding history

Over the centuries, Arabs were crossed again and again, so that a pony with a noble Arab head was created. Before the First World War there were about 2000 Landais ponies, after the Second World War there were about 150 horses left. The breed was threatened with extinction and there was a risk of inbreeding. Breeding was refreshed with Welsh and Arabian stallions .

Since 1968 there is a stud book in which the breed is divided into two sections. Landais mares with at least 75% pure Landais blood are registered in Section A. In section B ponies with at least 50% pure Landais blood are represented. The studbook for Section A has been closed since 1981, i. H. only registered animals may be used for breeding.
