history

The institution was set up in 1848 as a healing and care facility for the mentally ill in the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg and as a district hospital for curable physically handicapped people from the western region. In 1886 the Martinshaus was added as a branch for mentally ill children between the ages of 6 and 16. Since then, it has been known as the "Convalescence House in Roda with an institution for idiots".

In 1924 the convalescent house was renamed "Thuringian State Healing Institution in Stadtroda".

time of the nationalsocialism

During the time of National Socialism , disabled patients and other patients who were considered to be inferior were murdered. Some of the patients were deported via the Saxon intermediate station Zschadraß to the Pirna-Sonnenstein killing center and murdered there. The number of corpses delivered to the Anatomical Institute in Jena rose significantly. A “ children's department ” was set up in the house. From 1941 the Thuringian state sanatorium Stadtroda was the center for the killing of disabled children in Thuringia. The perpetrators include Gerhard Kloos , Margarete Hielscher and others.

post war period

Since 1947 the institution has been called "Landeskrankenhaus Stadtroda".

Since 2004 the hospital has been operating as "Asklepios Fachklinikum Stadtroda GmbH" as part of the Askepios Group.
