Participants in the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) discovered and photographed it during overflights in February 1940. The mountain was explored during the Fon of the US Navy research expedition into the Bellingshausen Sea in February 1960. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1960 as the rocky outcrops of the mountain as a landmark for the landing of ships on the west coast of Thurston Island served.
