After the settlement of Australia, the place was one of the typical stopovers for the transit on the west coast, which at that time still went through unpaved, largely desert-like, sandy terrain and was called "Tobinyallock". In 1862 the construction of the McDonald Track was completed, a continuous road from Melbourne to Gippsland and the place was renamed after the Lang Lang River on which it is located.
Today the region is the center of the largest asparagus growing region in the southern hemisphere . Beef and dairy products are also produced. The Australian auto company Holden operates a test site and vehicle development, durability and safety test center near Lang Lang.
A rodeo has been held annually on Easter Monday since 1940 .
