Lantbert of Lyon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lantbert von Lyon (* around 625 near Thérouanne , † probably 688 in Lyon ; also: Lambert von Fontenelle ) was Abbot of Fontenelle and Bishop of Lyon.

Lantbert's biography is only partially passed down and breaks off in the middle of the text.

In his youth Lantbert served at the court of the Merovingian King Chlothar III. before he decided to live a religious life. He entered the monastery of Saint-Wandrille and received the tonsure from its founder, Wandregisel . On his deathbed, Wandregisel recommended Lantbert or Ansbert as his successor. The monks of the monastery then chose the older Lantbert without any competition or resentment between the two.

In the turmoil after the death of King Chlothar III. Lantbert behaved neutrally as abbot and was able to secure generous gifts to the monastery from the new King Childerich II and Queen Balthild .

After his time as abbot (668–677) he was Bishop of Lyon.

His feast day (Catholic) is April 14th.

Remarks

  1. Jenal advises that the “incomplete overlap. Vita as well as the message in 'Vita Ansberti' [...] to be used with caution ”and assigns both writings to the same unknown author (before 811). (LThK 6,616)
  2. Jenal gives the years 677 / 679-683 / 688 for the office of bishop.
