Impact crater

The Lappajärvi is a lake in the west of Finland . It lies at an altitude of 69.5 m above sea level in the area of the municipalities of Lappajärvi , Vimpeli and Alajärvi . Km² with an area of 145.49, it is the largest lake in the landscape Southern Ostrobothnia and is in the range of the largest lakes in Finland on 33. place.

The lake fills the largest meteorite crater discovered in Finland so far with a diameter of 22 km. After it had long been wrongly assumed that the Lappjärvi was the remains of a volcanic caldera , it was possible in 1976 to prove that the Lappajärvi lake basin was formed around 77.85 million years ago as a meteorite with an estimated 1,500 m diameter Speed of 40 to 60 km / s hit the granite base of the Baltic Shield . The island of Kärnänsaari represents the central mountain of this crater; Apart from that, as is usual with crater lakes, there are hardly any islands in the lake. On Kärnänsaari there are heaped impact rocks , also scattered in the wider area.

At its deepest point, Lappajärvi is 37 meters deep. The main tributaries are Savonjoki and Kurejoki . The Lappajärvi drains over the Välijoki ("intermediate river") to the north to Lake Evijärvi , which in turn flows from the Ähtävänjoki to the Gulf of Bothnia .
