The Ähtävänjoki ( Swedish Esse å ) is a river in the Finnish landscapes of southern Ostrobothnia and Ostrobothnia .

The 60 km long river drains the Evijärvi and flows in a north-westerly direction to the Gulf of Bothnia . Including its source rivers Savonjoki and Välijoki , the total length is 120 km. East of Jakobstad it flows into the Larsmosjön ( Luodonjärvi in Finnish ), an artificial freshwater lake created by the construction of two dams from a bay in the Baltic Sea. One kilometer before the mouth, the Ähtävänjoki joins the Purmonjoki coming from the south .

The catchment area of the Ähtävänjoki extends over 2054 km² and includes the Lappajärvi .
