Lares (North Africa)

Lares is an ancient city in North Africa near today's Henchir Lorbeus in Tunisia . The city is located east of the Bagrada on the road from Carthage to Theveste , 15 kilometers southeast of Le Kef .

The city first belonged to Numidia and was an important base of the Roman general Gaius Marius in the war against the Numid king Jugurtha at the end of the 2nd century BC. In Roman times, Lares belonged to the Roman province of Africa , in late antiquity to Byzacena . Since Hadrian time the city was Colonia .

Extensive remains have been preserved. In the early Byzantine period, Justinian I had a new city wall built.

The titular diocese of Lares of the Roman Catholic Church goes back to the late antique bishopric of the city, which has been attested since the 3rd century AD .
