Life

Lars Lachmann comes from Bamberg , where he graduated from the Kaiser-Heinrich-Gymnasium . He got involved with nature conservation youth and did his community service with the state association for bird protection in Bavaria . Lachmann won fourth place in the field of biology at Jugend forscht in 1994 with a work “Whoever hears the nightingale ... Avifaunistic studies in the Bamberg district of Wildensorg and their ecological assessment.” After studying biology, he worked as a consultant at the European Programs Department of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and was u. a. for species protection in Central Asiaresponsible. Today Lachmann is a consultant for the protection of birds and species at the German Nature Conservation Union and was significantly involved in the development and implementation of various campaigns, such as the “ Hour of Garden Birds ”, the campaign against illegal bird trapping in Egypt .

Lachmann is Vice President of the German Council for Bird Protection eV (DRV).

Positions

In April 2016, the politician Hans-Josef Fell ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ) claimed that wind turbines in Germany would hardly affect birds of prey such as red kites, white-tailed eagles and others, and cited a study by the Swiss environmental agency KohlenNusbaumer. The paper came to the conclusion that the populations of many species of birds of prey had grown significantly, although around 26,000 wind turbines were built between 2006 and 2016. Lars Lachmann said: “In this study, data and facts from various sources are compiled in a very targeted manner in order to make the desired statement that wind power has no influence on bird species; and that in some cases they are even increasing, despite the expansion of wind power ”. Lachmann and the German Wildlife Foundation saw the study as an interest-driven paper from the lobby of wind power operators.

Lachmann called for more consistent action against hunting birds of prey in Germany. Public prosecutors, hunting authorities and the police should not trivialize such crimes and should set up staff units for environmental crime. He is of the opinion that in Germany bird species are not threatened in their population by domestic cats, but that cats do represent a bird protection problem that can be sensibly countered by castration initiatives.
