Lasar Naumowitsch Berman

Lasar Naumowitsch Berman ( Russian Лазарь Наумович Берман ; born February 26, 1930 in Leningrad , † February 6, 2005 in Florence ) was a Russian pianist .

Life

He made his first appearance at the age of seven in Moscow's Bolshoi Theater . His talent was further promoted from 1939 by training with Alexander Goldenweiser , Wladimir Sofronizki and Swjatoslaw Richter at the Moscow Conservatory .

Berman first gave concerts in the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc . The focus of his work was on the works of Liszt and Beethoven . His development into a pianist with an international reputation began under Herbert von Karajan , under whose direction he recorded Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto . During the 1980s, he was not allowed to leave the Soviet Union for several years because of comments critical of the regime.

In 1999 Berman was made an honorary senator of the Liszt School of Music in Weimar for his work as a lecturer and from 1995 to 2000 as a visiting professor .

Berman, who successfully participated in numerous competitions, was one of the best interpreters of the compositions by Tchaikovsky, Liszt and Sergei Rachmaninov .
