The Latücht ( Low German for lantern ) is an event building and cinema in Neubrandenburg in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The former Catholic Church of St. Joseph is a listed building .

history

Around the middle of the 19th century, members of the Roman Catholic denomination immigrated to Neubrandenburg , which was then consistently Protestant, and the surrounding area . However, a Catholic service was not held in the assembly hall of the Bürgererschule until 1899 , the first in Neubrandenburg since the introduction of the Reformation in Mecklenburg in 1549. In 1905, the Bonifatius Association acquired a plot of land in Grosse Krauthöferstrasse. The construction of the church began in 1906 and the church was consecrated in 1907 . Because of the increased use by Polish harvest workers, the church was popularly called the Schnitter Church . The simple furnishings were expanded between 1939 and 1942 to include a pulpit and a neo-baroque side altar.

After the end of the Second World War , the number of community members increased sharply , mainly due to war refugees and displaced persons . The interior of the church was redesigned around 1952, and an extension with functional rooms was built in 1960. However, the church was now too small for the larger community. After 1976 the Catholic community gave up the building that fell to the city of Neubrandenburg and built a new community center with the Church of St. Josef and Lukas in Heidmühlenstrasse. The threat of demolition of the old building due to road expansion was averted. The Neubrandenburg theater used the house as a workshop and prop store.

In 1991 the only neo-Romanesque building in Neubrandenburg was placed under monument protection . A multicultural center was set up by the city's decision and opened in 1996. The center was equipped with modern projection and film screening technology. The hall can accommodate up to 100 people.

The Latücht-Film & Medien eV took over the management and operation a municipal cinema with media workshop. The Latücht became, among other things, the venue of the " dokumentART " and the Neubrandenburg youth media festival . After disputes between the club and the city, including the financing of the Latücht, the management and marketing was transferred to the city's own event center Neubrandenburg GmbH in 2009.
