Lauder Church

The Lauder Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland . It is located in the Scottish town of Lauder in the Scottish Borders Council Area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists of the highest monument category A.

history

In 1153 at the latest, Hugh de Morville had a church built near a fort not far from today's Lauder Church. The Maitland clan acquired the fort and gradually expanded it into today's Thirlestane Castle . In 1617 the Scottish Parliament approved a motion to move the church. However, it was not until 1673 that John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale initiated the project. Tradition has it that today's Lauder Church was built an archer's range from Thirlestane Castle. The building was modernized in 1820, 1864 and 1904. Between 1969 and 1973 the Lauder Church was restored.

description

The Lauder Church stands on the former market square of the village. It has a cross-shaped plan, with all four legs having the same length; a structure that is probably unique in Scotland. Its masonry is made of quarry stone with natural stone details . The facades are plastered with Harl . Some elements have simple neo-Gothic details without the entire building being designed in this style. There is a crossing tower with a square floor plan. This continues octagonal and closes with a tent roof with a weather vane . All roofs are covered with gray slate. To a large extent, the interior no longer corresponds to the original condition.
