Lauderdale

Lauderdale is a small town and suburb of Hobart in the southeast of the Australian state of Tasmania . In the 2016 census, the population was found to be 2,411. It belongs to the Local Government Area Clarence City and is located on the east side of the narrow isthmus between the South Arm Peninsula and the main island of Tasmania. The city borders on Ralphs Bay in the west and with Roches Beach on Frederick Henry Bay in the east, where most of the population lives. Nearby Seven Mile Beach is a popular residential area for commuting to downtown Hobart.

To the north of the city is Single Hill , which overlooks Lauderdale. You can see the nearby ABC Radio transmitter mast. A sharp line can be seen on the Ralphs Bay side of town (right) where the water changes color. It is particularly easy to see from the South Arm Highway (B33).

The Walker Corporation is planning a large residential area called Canal Estate to build at the Ralphs Bay Lauderdale before. Against this, there were many protests for ecological reasons: The residential area would be built on sensitive marshland and impair the habitat of migratory birds and rare fish species. Former Tasmanian Prime Minister Paul Lennon supported the project intensively. The Save Ralphs Bay, Inc. , with the support of local and regional campaigns against it.
