Lauks

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lauks is a medieval farm in the parish of Lokrume on the Swedish island of Gotland .

location

Lauks is inland from Gotland, south of the road 148 from Visby to Lärbro and is 18 km northeast of Visby, four km southwest of Tingstäde and 13 km west of Slite .

Hof Lauks

Lauks was indirectly mentioned for the first time in 1370 when the merchant Nikles Louk was in Lübeck , and in 1379 when the merchant Anders Louk visited Söderköping . Presumably these were citizens of Visby who came from Lauks. Gervid Lauk, the first known sovereign ( Swedish landsdomare ) on Gotland, who was buried in the church of Lokrume in 1380 , was the owner of Lauks. His tombstone with the house brand ( Swedish bomark ) of Hof Lauk has been preserved in the church to this day. In 1511 the farm belonged to Lorens Lauks, who was then Thingherr ( Swedish tingsdomare ) in the Thing zu Bro.

The current house was built on the site of the medieval stone house, which in turn was preserved until the middle of the 18th century and which was said to be "almost the size of a church and four stories high" ( Swedish: "Nästan såsom en kyrka, fyra våningar högt “ ) was. What remains is the three-story storehouse ( Swedish : förrådshus ), which was probably built in the late 13th century. A partition on the upper floor has been dated to around 1370 using dendrochronological methods. On the ground floor there are two vaulted rooms ( Swedish välvda rum ) with their own doors. The upper floor has two doors that used to lead outside to a swallow passage ( Swedish svalgång ) along the side of the house. At the top is a pantry ( Swedish förrådsvind ) with a barrel vault. A doormat ( Swedish avträde ) on the upper floor suggests that the building could also have been used as a summer apartment and party venue.

The court cross ( Swedish gårdskors ) is one of two surviving court crosses on Gotland.

Nature reserve

The Lauks nature reserve is about 500 m north of the farm. It is about 34 hectares. A coniferous forest, which is now fairly natural, is growing there, interspersed with deciduous trees. Some spruces and pines are around 150–200 years old.

Dead wood is left lying around and occurs in the form of standing trunks and also on the ground and provides a habitat for many fungi and insects.

The ground is largely covered with moss and there is an abundant funga .
