Laurel Hubbard (* 1978 as Gavin Hubbard ) is a New Zealand weightlifter .

life and career

Hubbard was born in 1978 to Dick Hubbard , the entrepreneur and later mayor of Auckland . Hubbard successfully competed in men's competitions. In 2012, Hubbard had sex reassignment surgery and went on to compete in women's competitions. In 2017 she won the silver medal at the World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, USA ; previously she had to prove that her testosterone level was below a certain value. 2019 won Hubbard at the Pacific Games in Apia ( Samoa ) the gold medal.

Hubbard's appearance as a woman arouses displeasure among opponents, coaches and spectators who accuse her, as a former man, of having an unfair advantage.
