Laurent Dufresne (born March 2, 1972 in Calais ) is a former French football player and current coach.

Player career

Dufresne started playing football in his hometown at Calais RUFC . With this he belonged from 1978 to the youth department, before he succeeded in the season 1988/89 the jump into the third division of the club. In the course of the season he drew attention to himself with 16 goals, at the end of which he was signed by the professional club US Valenciennes-Anzin and taken directly into the squad of the first division team. Although he was not a regular at the beginning, he was able to book eight appearances and one goal in the top French division in his first season. However, he had to accept relegation in the same season. As a result, the team received a new coach in Bruno Metsu , who made Dufresne a regular player. Despite his eight goals, he experienced his second relegation in his second year as a professional and joined his team in the third division from 1994 . In addition, coach Robert Dewilder largely renounced him. Therefore, Dufresne completed only six third division games in the following two years, in which, however, he scored six goals. In addition, the club was forced to relegate to the fourth division in 1996, so he decided to move to LB Châteauroux , who had been promoted to the second division.

In Châteauroux he was again the undisputed regular player and scored 13 goals in his first season that contributed to promotion to the first division. The 1997/98 season, however, meant the direct relegation, even if Dufresne was represented for the first time as a regular player in the top class and he achieved six goals. He ran for three more years for the team, with both their and his personal performances were solid, but not enough for promotion. In 2001 he signed with AS Nancy in order to be promoted to the first division. His first season for Nancy was marked by a long injury break, which he could only play 16 games and score two goals. The desired promotion was missed in this as in the following seasons, even if Dufresne reached his personal best with 16 goals in 29 games in the 2003/04 season. The following year he succeeded with the team after four years in Nancy, but he decided to move back to the club, now renamed Valenciennes FC, where he had started his professional career.

At the end of his first season in 2006 he was able to celebrate the return to the first division with the team that had previously been promoted to the second division, even if he was no longer one of the regular players. At the same time he became France's second division champion for the second time in a row. After Dufresne had achieved relegation with Valenciennes in the 2006/07 season, he went back to Châteauroux. In the second division team he was mainly a substitute and was able to score a single goal. Accordingly, in 2008, at the age of 36, he decided to end his active career.

Coaching career

After the end of his career, Dufresne returned to Valenciennes again, where he worked as a youth coach for the under-17s. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he was introduced as the new assistant coach of the first team at the side of Daniel Sanchez , who has been a trainer in Valenciennes since 2011. In October 2013, he temporarily took over the role of head coach and returned to his role as his assistant after Ariël Jacobs was signed up for this position. After his time as assistant coach ended in February 2015, he stayed with the club's staff.
