Laurent Saloff-Coste (* 1958 ) is a French mathematician who deals with analysis , probability theory and geometric group theory.

Saloff-Coste received his doctorate in 1983 from the University of Paris VI ( Pierre et Marie Curie ) ( Thèse de troisieme cycle ). He completed the second part of the French doctorate ( Doctorat d'Etat ) in 1989 with Nicolas Varopoulos ( Analyze harmonique et analyze réelle sur les groupes ). He was Professor at Paul Sabatier University (Toulouse III) in the 1990s and has been Professor of Mathematics at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he also heads the faculty (2012).

As an analyst, Saloff-Coste deals with questions of probability theory, among other things in the investigation of partial differential equations or stochastic processes for diffusion processes on manifolds and their connection to the geometry of the underlying spaces and with random paths (random walks) on groups and their connection with the algebraic structure of the underlying groups. He also dealt with quantitative estimations of the properties of finite Markov chains and corresponding stochastic algorithms.

In 1994 he received the Rollo Davidson Prize . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 2011 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
