Laurentius Albertus , also Lorenz Albrecht, Osterfrank, Ostrofrancus (* around 1540 in Neustadt bei Coburg , † after 1583 in Vienna ?) Was a German linguist and grammarian.

Live and act

Laurentius was born in Neustadt near Coburg as the son of Magister Andreas Albertus. He enrolled at the University of Wittenberg in 1557 . From 1564 he worked in Würzburg , where he was supported by his patron Johann Egolf von Knöringen . Since he represented the Catholic faith as Bishop of Augsburg, it will have been he who moved Albertus to convert from the Protestant to the Catholic faith in 1568. He was supported by him and made scientific work possible for him.

After the death of his benefactor, he turned to Bavaria in 1575 and studied in Ingolstadt in 1580 . In order to do his doctorate he moved to Siena where he obtained his doctorate in August 1573 and then moved to Vienna where he became a priest in 1583. From then on his traces are lost.

Albertus emerged as the author of one of the first German grammars, which at the time was usually written in Latin. In this grammar he takes up the dialect, word formation, word meaning and also includes old German language. This gave him lasting importance in German linguistics and language teaching.
