Laurentius Schlemmer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Laurentius Schlemmer (* 1753 in Dingolfing ; † September 8, 1813 in Alburg ) was a German composer of sacred music in Mozart's time.

Life

Schlemmer was probably born on August 4th, 1753 in Dingolfing as the son of the daily worker Johann and his wife Elisabeth Schlemmer, because he was baptized there on the 5th of the same month, as was customary at the time.

Probably Schlemmer was a student of Michael Haydn in Salzburg ; at least his style allows parallels to be drawn with Salzburg cathedral music. Schlemmer married Anna Ellinger on October 27, 1794, at the time he was employed as a school teacher in Alburg and died there on September 8, 1813 of an intestinal fire.

Works

His church music works corresponded to the performance practice of his time. Therefore z. B. Passages in Schlemmer's Credo settings shortened (for example in the Missa solennis) Schlemmer's work is only performed occasionally and has been considered "unusable" by many church musicians since Caecilianism because of its often severe liturgical abbreviations .
