The Laurentiuskirche is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Bludenz .

Location with covered staircase

The church stands at a commanding height next to the baroque Gayenhofen Castle above the city and can be reached from the castle through an arched wall. The church can also be reached via a covered staircase, which begins at the Upper City Gate and City Museum in Herrengasse. Its course is angled twice. It was built in 1694 and renovated in 1840. The gable of the pilaster portico bears a fresco God the Father by Florus Scheel after Schnorr. At the upper exit on the right is a coat of arms tombstone from 1684 for Johann Baptist Salomon and wife Maria Kunigunde von Salomonsegg, née Schatz von Liebfeld, died 1669. The second staircase in the west was built in 1830 and has an oval fresco by Florus Scheel in the tympanum.

history

The church was probably owned by the Carolingians in 806 and fell to the diocese of Chur in 940 . The Laurentiuskirche is the mother church of pastoral care in the deaneries Bludenz-Sonnenberg and Montafon .

church

The church building from the 14th century was rebuilt after a city fire in 1491-1514. The Gothic nave, consecrated in 1514, was extended by the architect Andreas Schmidt between 1742 and 1743 and its structure has remained unchanged to this day. In 1928 the church was renovated and restored from 1967 to 1968 with Konrad Honold . The mighty east-facing Gothic nave with a retracted choir stands under a gable roof. Two-storey sacristies were added to the north and south in 1770. The church has pointed arch windows, circular windows and two pointed arch portals.

The mighty church tower was built from 1667 to 1670 in place of an ossuary according to a plan by Feldkirch's Jesuit father Maximilian von Lerchenfeld under Gabriel Simon, Christoph Schweler and Konrad Albrecht. The three-storey square base tower with the above three arched openings has four Gospel busts made of stone by the sculptor Johann Bin at the corners. Above it is a three-storey octagonal tower with arched openings and an onion hood. This tower, built on the model of many church towers in Bavarian Swabia, was followed by numerous other towers of the same style in Vorarlberg, e.g. those of the churches of Bartholomäberg, Vandans (old church), Raggal, as well as that of St. Jodok Schruns , and others . On the south side of the tower the coat of arms of the imperial eagle and the city coat of arms of Bludenz by Johann Matthias Jehly from 1857, restored by J. Jehly in 1897. Below is a sundial (1670), restored by Konrad Honold in 1968.

The tower clock from 1924 comes from the workshop of Eugen Hörz (Ulm).

The choir and country house are vaulted with a ribbed vault. In the choir is a fresco of Christ as judge of the world and angel with instruments of suffering by the painter Jos. Fuchs from 1857. The gallery from 1740 with a staircase on both sides stands in the middle on two marble columns, the lower gallery ceiling is decorated with stucco. The organ was built by Karl Mauracher (1789–1844) in 1836 and has been rebuilt.

In 1720 the high altar was built from black marble. The altarpiece Mary with Child, St. Andreas and Laurentius and the top picture Three Archangels were created by the Swiss artist Melchior Paul von Deschwanden in 1862.

In the choir are graves of the Counts of Werdenberg-Heiligenberg and a crucifixion group by the Feldkirch artist Erasmus Kern .

The ringing of the Laurentiuskirche consists of three bells, two of which are so valuable due to their age that they were not melted down in either of the two world wars. There is, on the one hand, the twelve or Susanna bell from 1506 by Martin Kisling and Hans Folmer II from the Biberach foundry (weight 2 t, diameter 1.42 m, strike tone ´), and on the other hand the elf bell the year 1545 by Hans von Malin (weight 0.75 t, diameter 1.1 m, strike tone g´). The third bell was cast from steel in 1922 (weight approx. 3.2 t, diameter 1.9 m, strike b °).

War memorial

The war memorial was erected in 1928 according to a plan by Alfons Fritz . In the staircase is a fresco Salvator by Hans Bertle.
