The Laurentiuskirche is a church in the Kreuztal district of Ferndorf in Siegerland .

history

The Ferndorf Church was first mentioned in 1339 in a patronage deed. However, it was built towards the end of the 12th century and was consecrated to St. Lawrence. This church is a late Romanesque, three-bay Westphalian hall church with a western tower built in front. However, this is older than the nave , it is purely Romanesque.

A major renovation took place in 1778. The previously very small, round-arched windows were significantly enlarged and made flat-arched. In addition, the portals were renewed, new benches were installed and galleries moved in. Benches, galleries and doors have been preserved to this day.

In 1887 the church had become too small for the many people in the parish, so the old choir was demolished and the church was expanded to include a transept and choir, sacristy and baptismal waiting room. Since then, the church has been 33 meters long, previously it was 26 m, including the very long choir.

The inauguration of the church took place on February 17, 1929 after the last major renovation. The galleries of the New Church were lowered to the height of the galleries of the Old Church and, like the pulpit, were newly clad, since in 1887 they had not been adjusted to the baroque parapets. The church received electric light. The art nouveau lamps are still in service today.

Epitaph of Valentin von der Hees

Among the special features in and on the church are a number of cast-iron grave slabs, the most valuable of which is that of the knight Valentin von der Hees from 1559.

With almost 900 years of history, the Laurentius Church is one of the oldest churches in the Siegerland.

Namesake

The church was named after Lawrence of Rome , who was responsible for the local church property on behalf of the Pope.

After the beheading of Pope Sixtus II by the Roman Emperor Valerian , Laurentius was supposed to hand over the entire church property as a tribute. But Laurentius refused and distributed the church property to all members of the community. He then presented all the poor and sick to the emperor as true church assets.

Laurentius was imprisoned by Emperor Valerian. Tortured several times, he was finally executed on a glowing grate.
