The Laurin fountain

The Laurin fountain is a fountain in Bolzano . It shows a scene from the legend of King Laurin's rose garden , in which Dietrich von Bern brings down the dwarf king Laurin.

The fountain is the work of the sculptors Andreas Kompatscher and Arthur Winder and was erected in May 1907 on the Bolzano water wall , in the field of view of the rose garden . The factory was commissioned by the Talferleege Culturverein in order to be able to market Bolzano as a Laurin city . Accordingly, an inscription at the foot of the fountain explained the tourist motive of the construction: To increase the well-being of the citizens, to honor the foreign guest .

After the annexation of South Tyrol by Italy , the fountain was demolished by fascists on the night of June 4th to 5th, 1933 . He was then transferred to the Bolzano City Museum , and later to the Rovereto War Museum . It was only brought back to Bolzano in 1993 - after many years of efforts by the South Tyrolean cultural councilors Anton Zelger and Bruno Hosp - and in 1996 it was placed in the center of today's Silvius-Magnago-Platz in front of the state parliament building and Palais Widmann . After the redesign of the square in summer 2018, the Laurin fountain is now slightly offset in front of the entrance to the Palais Widmann.

Due to its violent removal, the work of art, which was originally set up for tourist purposes, became a conflict issue in South Tyrolean society. The Italian right strives for an ethnic-nationalistic interpretation of the group of figures in which the “Germanic” hero Dietrich von Bern defeats the “Romanic” King Laurin in battle, which disqualifies the fountain in its political symbolism as a public monument. Conversely, the German-speaking right defends the fountain as an identity-creating monument.
