Mercy Lavinia Warren Bump (born October 31, 1841 or 1842 in Middleborough , † November 25, 1919 there ) was an American actress.

Life

Lavinia Warren came from a distinguished family. She grew up with four brothers and three sisters. In her first year of life she developed normally, after that her growth was extremely delayed and stopped completely in her tenth year. She only reached a height of 81 centimeters. Her youngest sister, Minnie, was also short, the rest of the siblings were not. Lavinia Warren attended a normal school, worked intermittently as a teacher in her hometown and was also trained in housekeeping by her mother .

PT Barnum made her an offer in 1862 to put her on display in his American Museum for $ 1,000 a week . However, she initially refused to travel to the royal courts of Europe. Barnum was not discouraged, however, visited the young woman's parents and finally persuaded Lavinia Warren to postpone her trip to Europe for a few weeks and first to show herself in his museum.

In Boston she met Charles Stratton , who soon proposed marriage to her. The wedding in Grace Church ( New York City ) on February 10, 1863 triggered a lot of media coverage. The couple continued to travel the country and present themselves to the audience. Lavinia Warren used the stage name "Queen of Beauty". The death of Minnie Warren, who died in childbirth in 1878, triggered a crisis. Lavinia Warren and her husband were considering retiring from their careers, but Barnum managed to persuade them to continue touring. On one of these trips Lavinia Warren and Charles Stratton witnessed the catastrophic hotel fire at Newhall House in 1883 . They survived unscathed, but a few months later Stratton died of a stroke. Two years later Lavinia Warren married Count Primo Magri (1849–1920), who was also short . After her death, however, she was buried at the side of her first husband. The gravestone bears the simple words His Wife .

Movies

In 1915 Lavinia Warren had a role in the silent film The Lilliputians' Courtship . Count Magri was also involved in this film. In 1999, both Lavinia Warren and her first husband were made Uncensored in the movie Freaks! shown by Vivian Forlander and Ari M. Roussimoff.
