Lawrence Ludlow Cohen

Lawrence Ludlow Cohen (* 1836 in Charleston , South Carolina ; † 1918 in Kemah , Galveston County , Texas ) was an American genre , landscape , still life and portrait painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Cohen was already making an appearance in his hometown as a 13-year-old artist. In the years 1853 to 1855 or 1856 he stayed in Düsseldorf to study painting. Presumably he became a student of Emanuel Leutze . In 1854 and 1855 he was a member of the Düsseldorf artists' association Malkasten . Few genre paintings have survived from the time after his return to the United States. As a soldier, he took on the side of the Confederate States of America in the American Civil War in part, 1861 in the immediate vicinity of General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard .
