from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lazaros the Bulgarian Bulgarian Лазар Български or Lazaros the Shepherd or Lazar the New Serb. Лазар Нови (* 1774 in Дебел дял near Gabrovo , Bulgaria; † April 23, 1802 in or near Bergama ) was a Christian martyr . He is venerated as a saint of the Orthodox Church . His feast day is April 23 .

origin

Lazaros was born in a Bulgarian Orthodox family in the village of Дебел дял (Romanian Debel Deal; English Debel dyal). His homeland offered him no livelihood as a Christian. There was also no money to join a guild (Efnafi) for an apprenticeship in the handicraft town of Gabrovo, which was only 15 kilometers away, with its at least 26 trades such as blacksmiths, knife makers, turners, furriers, potters and silkworms.

emigration

Lazaros was left with emigration as an unskilled worker. Through the mediation of Rumorthodox Christians, he came to the village of Soma near Bergama, the old Pergamon , as a shepherd . Even today, emigration is characteristic of his home village, whose population has decreased from 638 to 77 in the last few decades, including only seven people under the age of 60.

martyrdom

One day he had to save a Turkish woman from his sheepdogs. This woman was so angry about the incident that she claimed that Lazaros tried to harm her. He was then sent to the prison and tortured for many days. Finally, as a Christian, he was given the choice of either accepting the Muslim faith or the death penalty. The aga of the region had him cruelly tortured on the night of April 22nd, 1802, but this did not shake Lazaro's faith. As a result, on April 23, 1802, the death sentence was carried out by the humiliating hanging. Lazaros is said to have thrown the rope himself because the Turks were afraid of his courage to die.

Legend

Numerous miracles are said to have occurred over his relics.
