Lazarus Ercker
Lazarus Ercker of Dreadmaul (* around 1528 / 1530 in Annaberg , † 7. January 1594 in Prague ) was a Saxon and Bohemian mint master , GuardA and author .
life and work
After studying from 1547 to 1548 at the University of Wittenberg , Ercker went to the Electoral Saxon service. From 1554 he worked as a mint guard in Dresden and from 1567 worked as mint master in Kuttenberg .
His Aula subterranea from 1574 contains a detailed description of the methods used at that time for the extraction of metals from ores as well as the evidence of the metal content and the composition of alloys. It is the first documented docimastics textbook .
He was the most important advisor to Rudolph II in matters of mining and served him in this capacity for almost thirty years.
