Lazarus III. Count Henckel von Donnersmarck (* probably June 26, 1729 in Troppau , † August 8, 1805 in Siemianowitz ) was a freelance gentleman and mining industrialist.

origin

His parents were the free class lord and kk Real Privy Councilor Count Carl Henckel von Donnersmarck (1688–1760) and his wife the Freiin Josepha von Brunetti (1695–1740), a daughter of Baron Lazarus Ambrosius von Brunetti (1666–1734), this was kk Real Privy Councilor and Chief Chancellor of Silesia. His sister Marianne was married to the Prussian Major General Otto Ernst von Gersdorf .

Life

Until 1764 he was a major in the Trautmannsdorff Regiment. After the death of his brother Franz Ludwig in 1768 he inherited his property and the entails, with a focus on the lordships of Beuthen and Tarnowitz . With the death of his cousin Anton Amadeus in 1793, as a senior member of the family, he also received the dignity of a free class lord. He resided in Siemianowitz.

Lazarus III. played a decisive role in the revival of the industrial and mining activities in the Bytom rule, which were affected by the Seven Years' War . In addition, he pushed the technical modernization forward. Up until his rule, iron ore mining and iron production were operated on a comparatively technically primitive level. The basic problem of the entire Upper Silesian iron production up to now has been the lack of water, wood and ore. The ore extraction was not very expensive, but it was operated very inefficiently. This changed in the time of Lazarus III.

This included the lining of the shafts, the quantitative increase in production and the expansion of ore processing in the production of raw and bar iron . In the beginning he had three huts with a blast furnace and four fresh fires, operated with charcoal. In these, the production of bar iron could be increased from a total of 3200 quintals in 1783 to 5800 quintals in 1805. The ore that was not processed in-house was sold to companies in the area. He significantly expanded sales, especially for bar irons, to Lower Silesia and Austria, among others .

Later he greatly expanded coal production. The Glücksgrube , later Countess Laura Grube , was opened as early as 1787 . This was followed by the Gottessegen mine in 1802 , Antonie and Karl in 1805 and other mines.

Shortly before his death in 1805, he built the Antonie ironworks (Antonienhütte), a large and expensive ironworks for the time, which already had coke-firing. The construction cost the then very high sum of 50,000 Reichstalers. Lazarus III. was one of the first private entrepreneurs to follow the example of the Prussian fiscal companies and to use hard coal instead of charcoal.

In this context, he also founded the Antonienhütte settlement (now part of Ruda Śląska ), which was the basis for industrial and mining development in the south of his property.
