Otto Ernst von Gersdorf

Otto Ernst von Gersdorf , also Otto Ernst von Gersdorff (born May 3, 1710 at Gut Steinbach an der Neisse ; † March 23, 1773 at Gut Zwecka near Seidenberg ) was a royal Prussian major general and chief of the Old Prussian Hussar Regiment No. 8 .

Life

He was born in Saxony and joined the Electoral Saxon Cadet Corps in 1727. In 1730 he was transferred to the Polenz Cuirassier Regiment as Cornet. In 1733 he became a second lieutenant. In 1739 he went into Prussian service and in 1741 he came to the newly established Hussar Regiment No. 6 as Rittmeister . In 1745 he became major and fought near Striegau and Kesselsdorf . He went through the officer positions and in February 1751 was lieutenant colonel in the hussar regiment No. 6. So he was transferred in 1753 to the hussar regiment No. 7 (Malachowski). He fought in Jägersdorf in 1756 and in Zorndorf in 1757 . In November 1758 he became a colonel. In April 1759 he took over the Hussar Regiment No. 8 (Seidlitz). At Bischofswerda he was able to capture the imperial general Wehlau. In November 1759 he was appointed major general by the king. He distinguished himself in the skirmishes in Reppen and Pretsch, but in 1759 he was taken prisoner in the battle of Maxen . After his release he was tried in court martial in 1763, sentenced to prison and then released. He then retired to Gut Zwecka near Seidenberg, where he died and was buried in the local crypt.

He was married twice. He married his first wife in 1749 in Karlshof. It was the Countess Maria Anne Henckel von Donnersmarck (* July 26, 1725, † February 8, 1760) daughter of Carl Joseph Erdmann Henckel von Donnersmarck (1688-1760). She died while he was in Austrian captivity. The couple had three sons and a daughter, Marianna Albertina Ernestine (born February 8, 1756 in Bischofswerder , † July 24, 1811 in Tarnowitz ), married to Count Karl von d'Uclaux de La Valette (1748-1821). He was a Prussian chamberlain and a large landowner. He met his second wife while in captivity in Austria. He was Maria Laura von und zu Wetzel († around 1795). The couple married in Innsbruck in 1761. Her father was the major general and commander of the city of Prague Friedrich Emmerich Joseph von und zu Wetzel and her mother the Spaniard Anna Maria Countess von Salasar Villa Spesa and Tredos Mora . The later Saxon chamberlain Friedrich August Ernst Joseph von Gersdorf (born August 30, 1762 in Innsbruck, † around 1804) survived the marriage .
