The León Bridge ( Museum Bridge until 2011 ) is a pedestrian bridge designed by Dietmar Feichtinger in Hamburg's HafenCity . It leads in a north-west-south-east direction from Dar-es-Salaam-Platz over the western end of Brooktorhafen to the waterside of Kaispeicher B , which is now the seat of the International Maritime Museum Hamburg (IMMH).

The bridge was opened in the summer of 2008 as a "Museum Bridge" and was named in 2011 after the Hamburg twin city León in Nicaragua .

A nameless footbridge leads from Dar-es-Salaam-Platz to the east to Brooktorpromenade over the likewise nameless connecting canal between Holländischbrookfleet / St.-Annen-Fleet and Brooktorhafen. Further to the east, the Shanghai Bridge, designed together with the León Bridge, and the Ericus Bridge run across the Brooktorhafen; further south, the Busan Bridge runs in a west-east direction over the Magdeburg harbor .

Design and construction

The "kink" in the middle of the bridge.

The León Bridge is a design by the architect Dietmar Feichtinger in the form of a haunched girder bridge made from a steel box girder . The implementation planning of the engineering structure was carried out by WTM Engineers.

A special design feature is that the floor plan of the bridge is not straight, but halfway and at the same time has an unsupported bend of 25 ° at its widest point. This is unique in the world and is intended to underline the function of the bridge as a vantage point over Magdeburg harbor and Brooktorhafen and, according to Feichtinger, give it an "object-like character". This leads to more difficult static conditions, because 70 meters have to be spanned without columns because of the shipping in Brooktorhafen. This required a 1000-tonne concrete foundation on the bank to which the 80-tonne bridge is anchored. This foundation must also absorb a torque around the longitudinal axis of the adjacent half of the bridge, which is created by the second half of the bridge overhanging to the right when viewed from this axis. At the quay storage facility, the bridge rests on a movable bearing that compensates for changes in length due to loads and temperature fluctuations and protects the historic storage facility.

The design of the León Bridge is simple. A railing made of steel and wood is attached to the steel body of the bridge, which is illuminated at night.
