Life

After training as a dental assistant in 1934, he began to take an active interest in photography . His recordings were mainly limited to surfing.

Due to an ulcer, LeRoy Grannis began, on the advice of his doctor, to intensify his hobby photography for surfing as a therapy and to compensate for his work. He first followed his doctor's advice with a 35mm camera and a 400mm lens. He also set up his own darkroom in a garage.

He founded one of the most famous surfing magazines , " The Surfer ", in which his photos were published. This is how his first sold photos were created, which were later put together into illustrated books. He knew how to combine nature in the form of waves, surf and beaches with surfers to create works of art. This is how he became one of the most successful surf photographers of the sixties and seventies.
