Le Nordais is a wind farm on the St. Lawrence River in Cap-Chat ( Gaspésie , Québec ) with an installed capacity of 99.75 MW . In the same place is the largest Darrieus rotor in the world. This is called Éole and is named after the Greek god Aiolos . It was supposed to produce 4 megawatts, but, like the Growian in Germany, never ran satisfactorily and did not get beyond the experimental stage.
history
The Parc Le Nordais was built by Axor and M&N Wind Power and leased to Hydro-Québec . The first part of the wind farm went online in December 1998 and delivers 57 MW, the second part in autumn 1999 with 42.75 MW.
In 2007 the wind farm was bought by Canadian Hydro for 116 million Canadian dollars . This company is now owned by TransAlta , the wind farm itself operates under the name Kenwind Industries Ltd.

Éole was a Hydro-Québec project and was built in 1988. It was an experiment on the commercial use of vertical axis rotors on a large scale and was at times the largest and nominally most powerful wind turbine ever. Low-frequency vibrations of the construction of around 0.8 Hertz , which were caused by the load changes of the rotor blades in the current, the enormous size and the then less high-quality materials led to high loads, material fatigue and long downtimes of the system. The bearing of the rotor also suffered from severe wear; on the one hand because of its high weight, on the other hand due to the vertical force component from the bracing with six wire ropes . Like Growian, Éole only ran for a short time and was finally shut down in 1992 after being severely damaged by a gust of wind. Today it is a tourist attraction.
