Life science lessons (LKU or LeKU) are professional ethics lessons for soldiers in the Bundeswehr . It is part of the overall education of soldiers and a special task assigned to the military chaplaincy, which is carried out by military chaplains and pastoral officers. Life science lessons are not religious lessons . It has been mandatory for all soldiers since 2010.

The aim is to provide a forum for free and trusting discussions and an open exchange of ideas on basic ethical questions of lifestyle with the life science lessons as well as the seminars and working groups for officers and NCOs. This should serve the personal development and the sharpening of the political and ethical judgment of the soldiers. So the life science lessons carried out by the Catholic and Protestant military chaplains z. B. thematize the life issues associated with an assignment abroad and contribute to the development of professional ethical competence.

This practice is attacked by those who are critical of the church because there is no separation of church and state . The Catholic military bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck had repeatedly made discriminatory statements about homosexuals , but was jointly responsible for the content of the life science lessons. Overbeck's stance contradicts the Bundeswehr's leadership aid in dealing with sexuality .

In September 2018, the case of a lieutenant colonel and arms control officer became known who received an "educational measure in the form of instruction and admonition", comparable to a warning, because of too active, critical participation in classes (topic: Is Islam compatible with modernity? ) would have. The proceedings are still ongoing.

The barracks lessons were the historical forerunner of life science lessons .
