Lech Garlicki

Lech Garlicki or Leszek Garlicki (born August 23, 1946 in Warsaw ) is a Polish lawyer and was a judge at the European Court of Human Rights from June 26, 2002 to September 30, 2012 .

Life

In 1968 he graduated from Warsaw University and became an assistant at the Faculty of Law and Administration. In 1973 he received his doctorate there and was appointed associate professor in 1980. Also from 1980 - until 1993 - he worked as a freelance lawyer. In 1987 he was appointed full professor of law. In the same year he became a member of the Council for Legal Affairs of the Polish Prime Minister. From 1992 to 1994 he was director of the Institute for American Studies at the University of Warsaw. On June 26, 2002, he was elected judge at the European Court of Human Rights as the successor to Jerzy Makarczyk , who resigned prematurely from his office. His term of office ended in 2012. He was succeeded by Krzysztof Wojtyczek .

Garlicki is a founding member of the European Law Institute , a non-profit organization devoted to legal research and the improvement of European law with the aim of constructively accompanying European integration in the field of European law.
