The Ledl Tanga was the prototype of a two-seater sports car presented in 1978 by the Austrian company Ledl . Like the later production model, the vehicle had an in-house developed floor assembly, so it was not a kit car , even if numerous parts from vehicles from other manufacturers were used. The Ledl Tanga was the predecessor of the Ledl AS series model presented in 1981 .

development

In 1977 Günter Ledl , who had previously made a name for himself with the manufacture of buggies and replicas based on VW Beetle chassis, had a vision: he wanted to produce an Austrian sports car with a chassis developed in-house, and thus for the first Austrian car in over 30 years to care. On November 22, 1978, the dark blue prototype was presented to the public in the ballroom of the Parkhotel Schönbrunn . The vehicle had a body made of GRP , which was mounted on a steel frame chassis. The 1.3 liter engine of the Ford Fiesta served as the drive source, and there were also numerous other components from the Ford parts shelf on the vehicle: the front suspension and steering came from the Ford Taunus , the rear axle was a converted front axle of the Ford Fiesta, And for the transmission, too, Ledl relied on proven Ford technology. In the years that followed, the prototypes went through an extensive test program with 700,000 test kilometers until the Ledl AS series model went into production in 1981. By then, the car's body had undergone 16 development stages, so that the appearance of the Ledl AS differed significantly from that of the original prototype. The change of the model name to AS was the result of an impending legal dispute with the Porsche company , as the name Tanga was very similar to the brand name Targa used by Porsche .
