The plant family of the Ledocarpaceae belongs to the order of the cranesbill-like (Geraniales). The distribution of the species is exclusively neotropical : The areas are in western South America , mainly in the Andes .

description

They are mostly small shrubs or, less often, semi-shrubs . The mostly opposite leaves are simple or compound; the leaves of some species are deeply lobed. Stipules are missing.

The flowers stand alone or in little flowered inflorescences . The hermaphrodite, radially symmetrical flowers are five-fold. There is an outer chalice. There are five sepals and five petals each, and one or two circles with five stamens . The three or five fused carpels form an upper ovary . The style is short or not recognizable and there are as many scars as carpels. There are fruit capsules formed.

Systematics

In the Ledocarpaceae family there are only two to three genera with about eleven to twelve species:

  • Balbisia Cav. (including Ledocarpon )
  • Rhyncotheca (with some authors a separate family Rhyncothecaceae Endl.): There are no sepals in this genus.
