View on Maoism

As a 6- to 13-year-old Chen traveled with a propaganda group through Inner Mongolia in China to sing and write poetry about Mao Zedong in public. In a 1999 interview , she said that as a child, she loved singing about Mao. But she also said that this cultural revolution was bad for China and sparked a lot of controversy. As a young girl, she did not know that these were political interests.

“I didn't know there was a political reason for our performances. I only knew I didn't have to go to school. The training I received gave me discipline that helped me to perform in America.

Translated: I didn't know that there was a political reason for our achievements. All I knew was that I didn't need to go to school and that I received a disciplined education that helped me get to America. "
