Lee Hong-koo (born May 9, 1934 ) is a South Korean politician and member of the Saenuri Party .

Life

In 1957 he scored his first degree from the Oxford College of Emory University , two years later, his second in the same place. He then successfully completed a PhD in political science at Yale University . He has held professorships at Emory University, Case Western Reserve University and Seoul National University . He assumed his first political office in 1988 when he was appointed Minister for Reunification. In 1991 he served as ambassador to London . On December 17, 1994, he became Prime Minister of South Korea and remained in office until December 18, 1995, when he was replaced by Lee Soo-sung . In 1998 he was reinstated as ambassador, this time to the United States in Washington, DC
