Legatum Institute

The Legatum Institute is an independent, not-for-profit institute based in London and one of the UK's well-known think tanks . The declared aim of the institute is to promote general education in relation to national and international politics and social and economic policy . It has been headed since 2016 by Philippa Stroud (* 1965, Baroness), conservative member of the British House of Lords ; she succeeded Jeffrey Gedmin , who had headed the facility from 2011.

history

The Legatum Institute was founded in 2007 by the Foundation Legatum Foundation established the philanthropic branch of the of the New Zealand billionaire Christopher Chandler powered investment company Legatum Capital, based in the Gulf state Dubai . The foundation was granted non-profit status in the UK in 2015 . In addition to the foundation, the institute is financed by over 40 other major donors. It is based in the London borough of Mayfair . Fellows include Oliver Letwin and Gisela Stuart .

Legatum Prosperity Index

The institution became known for its annual report on the prosperity indicator Legatum Prosperity Index (PI), which evaluates 65  policy areas with a total of 294 individual indicators for the three areas of inclusive societies, open economies and empowered people (" inclusive societies, open economic systems , participant people") . These three goals are also mentioned as the main themes of the institute's strategy, which aims to contribute to increasing the prosperity of the world's population and reducing poverty . The PI has rarely been mentioned in leading media since 2010, and there are no scientific reviews after 2016. At the end of 2019, the Legatum Institute published its PI on 167 countries (99% of the world population), the leading country being Denmark ( PI 83.96 ).

criticism

From 2017, the institute was criticized as part of its declared policy of promoting democracy and capitalism for its support for Brexit hardliners of the political Conservative Party .
