The ABC textbook of the future Emperor Maximilian is now in the Austrian National Library .

Origin and foundation

Maximilian was born on March 22nd, 1459 in Wiener Neustadt , the teaching book master's ABC textbook was written around 1465 for the then six-year-old boy. The splendid textbook was given to him by the wealthy Viennese citizen Stephan Heuner. In a book production typical of the late Middle Ages, the text was probably created by a few selected scribes in offices and monasteries in the vicinity of Vienna and then handed over to the master teaching book for coloring. The founder then commissioned the master to paint the two other manuscripts for the training of the future emperor. The donor's coat of arms is depicted in the books and should therefore discreetly remind the child of the donor's help.

content

The ABC textbook comprises 54 small-format pages. It teaches the alphabet , basic Latin prayers (such as the pater noster and Ave Maria ) and other Christian prayers, as well as memorabilia. It contains 14 miniatures depicting scenes painted in initial letters . At the beginning, a portrait of the boy Maximilian next to his teacher is painted to accompany the text of the Our Father. Furthermore, the work is almost entirely painted on the edge with secondary book decorations such as leaves and tendrils, in which numerous animals and mythical creatures cavort. The large letters for learning the ABC are also beautifully designed and gold-plated.

The late Gothic work is regarded as one of the historically representative manuscripts for the last blossoming of book illumination before the complete triumph of the art of printing.
