The Leibniz Institute for Financial Market Research SAFE (Sustainable Architecture for Finance in Europe) in Frankfurt is an economic research institute that focuses on the financial system and its actors as a subject area. SAFE is a member of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Science Association (WGL) and is based in the House of Finance on the Westend campus of Goethe University Frankfurt .

history

The institute was founded in 2013 under the name "LOEWE Center SAFE" as a cooperation between the Center for Financial Studies and the Goethe University Frankfurt . Between 2013 and the end of 2019 it was funded by the Hessian State Offensive for the Development of Scientific and Economic Excellence ( LOEWE ). In September 2017, the state of Hesse applied for SAFE to join the Leibniz Society. On May 3, 2019, the Joint Science Conference decided to include SAFE in joint federal-state funding from 2020. On November 28, 2019, the general assembly of the Leibniz Association approved the inclusion of SAFE.

Goals and structure

According to its own statements, SAFE is dedicated to interdisciplinary research into the financial markets and their actors in Europe as well as to science-based, independent policy advice. The institute relies on the collaboration of researchers from the fields of economics, law and political science as well as the variety of scientific methods.

According to the company, the research program is divided into six departments that are thematically interlinked: Financial Intermediation, Financial Markets, Household Finance, Macro and Finance, Money and Finance, Law and Finance. In addition, SAFE maintains a data center that takes care of the provision of research data and the creation of its own data sets.

In addition, SAFE operates a Policy Center, which offers policy advice with a focus on Berlin, Brussels and Wiesbaden. According to its own information, SAFE maintains a permanent dialogue with members of the government and parliament on current financial market issues on the basis of scientific independence.

From 2013 to the end of 2019, SAFE was funded by the Hessian excellence initiative LOEWE . As a Leibniz Institute, SAFE has been jointly supported by the federal and state governments since 2020.

The institute is headed by the scientific director Jan Pieter Krahnen , the deputy scientific director Uwe Walz and the commercial director Muriel Büsser, who together form the board.
